STEP PARENTING: STEP-CHILD/STEP-PARENT RELATIONSHIPS

"STEP PARENTING"

Parenting is defined as the task and responsibility of raising a child. Being a parent is a huge responsibility, and being a step parent can be even more challenging. Our parenting has an incredible effect on our society. Step parents should realise that they are raising the child/children to be responsible adults.

In most families today, biological parents are ‘replaced’ by step mothers/fathers. This is flamed by the high divorce rate we have in our societies today. This usually means one parent will have custody of the child/children, and we cannot expect that one parent to remain alone, without a partner.

It is important for step-parents to respect the fact that the child has a relationship with their mother/father and that they cannot replace them. You need to be understanding and compassionate, especially whether the biological parent is still alive or not. Step parents should first strive to build a relationship with the step child before they start enforcing discipline.

"STEP PARENTING VS BIOLOGICAL PARENTING"

It is very important, as a step-parent, to have a healthy, mature relationship with the biological parent. Some biological parents may be hard on step parents, especially if they are still angry and bitter about the divorce; but these parties need to get along well for the benefit of the children. As a biological parent, you don’t want to fight with the person who lives with and is raising your child.

Fix your relationship, before it is too late. Just imagine, if you get along very well, your child would be having a couple of people caring for him/her and helping him/her along in the journey of life.

Be yourself and do not try to be his/her biological parent.
