DEPRESSION is an emotional illness and can be described as a persistent state of sadness/sad mood, resulting in a lack of interest in normally enjoyable activities and/or life itself.
It often distorts the sufferer's sense of reality and can leave them with feelings of helplessness and a willingness to die.

Medically, the condition is brought upon by some imbalance in the brain. The most common social factor contributing to depression is loss - either due to
the death of a loved one,
death of a breadwinner,
loss of income/employment or
loss of property.
Other factors that can cause a person to be depressed are extreme loneliness, guilt and anxiety. Stressful living conditions, and poverty contribute and lead to increased sadness in our societies today.

Symptoms of depression include:
Unexplained loss of weight or a change in weight (due to loss of appetite or a change in eating habits);
Lack of sleep or a change in sleeping patterns;
A sense of worthlessless, helplessness and/or guilt; and
If you or a loved one has been in a sad state for longer than two weeks, with any of the symptoms above, it would be
advisable to seek medical assistance immediately. Depression can be managed with medication and there are a lot of herbal remedies on the market too. Speak to your doctor/specialist practioner.
