THE PROBLEM OF VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS

SCHOOL VIOLENCE: AN INCREASING EPIDEMIC

Have schools always been unsafe or has violence in schools gotten out of hand? The truth is, schools have always been ridden with bullying, victimisations, mean-ness and fights. Even in the late '80s, there were what I refer to as "student-thugs" amongst us. You will remember them - they are the trouble-makers, the unrespectful ones, the loud-mouths, the bullies, the knife-carriers.

WHAT CAUSES VIOLENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS?

The root cause of school violence or school-based violence can be traced back to society as a whole, and to individual families. Our society is stressed out, angry, frustrated and very much out of tune with everything. One only has to look at the kind of intolerance, the bullying, the 'touchiness' people portray on our roads, to understand how these people's families must be and how their children must be feeling. Everytime I witness 'road-rage' behaviour or unnecessary irritation and hatred on the roads, I pity the spouses and children of people who show such lack of emotional maturity and calmness. I bet if one can follow them to their homes, they will most likely find a family about to fall apart.

Family violence and high rates of divorce around the world are leaving a lot of casualities in the form of children. They then become angry and take it out on other kids.

Most parents are also spending less time with their children in the name of making money for them. I do not think these violent habits could survive if we were all alert and in touch with our children. It is a long way from the time a child becomes frustrated and angry in his world, to the time this child takes a dangerous object to school and stabs another child. We can all do something. Let us talk to our children; let us spend more time with them; let us listen to them and mentor them. Most of all, let us show them some love.
