"LEAP YEAR BELIEFS": CUSTOMS, PRACTICES AND BELIEFS ASSOCIATED WITH LEAP YEARS

Leap year beliefs and customs / Also Lip year

This year, 2008 is a leap year or a lip year. In a leap-year, the month of February, which normally consists of 28 days, would then have 29 days.

Leap years occur every 4 years and therefore the next one will be in 2012. Leap years are always in even numbers.

LIP YEAR CUSTOMS, MYTHS AND BELIEFS

There exist a myriad of beliefs, customs and myths about lip/leap years

Some of the leap/lip year beliefs and customs include:

- Leap Year is the traditional time that women can propose marriage. This can happen on February 29th. Basically, women wear the pants in leap years.

- That couples who get married during a Leap Year will have bad luck

According to Wikipedia, a person born on February 29 may be called a "leapling". In common years they usually celebrate their birthdays on 28 February or 1 March. Most people would not like to give birth on leap year’s day, but I know of at least one person who has opted to have her baby on February 29! So, not everybody is superstitious; some people do dare to be different.
