DIVORCE AND MIDDLE-AGE: WHY DO SO MANY COUPLES DIVORCE AROUND MIDDLE-AGE?

"Throughout a woman's child-bearing years, a kind of 'debt account' is established where existing and future issues accumulate, compounding interest with each passing month that the debt goes unpaid."

1. THIS COULD BE WHY DOVORCE IS RIFE AROUND MIDDLE-AGE/MENOPAUSE

********************************************************

In her ground-breaking book titled “The Wisdom of Menopause”, Dr. Christiane Northrup explains that the resentful and/or moody feelings that most women experience every month around their periods – what we know as PMS - are in fact real issues that need to be addressed and resolved. Most of the times, both women - and the men in their lives - dismiss such issues as PMS symptoms, and not genuine ones that need some serious attention.

Most women are unaware that the issues that crop up to bother them and demand their resolve around the time of their monthly periods (every month without fail) are usually the same issues, coming back over and over again. That on its own should sound an alarm. No woman could have the same issues bothering her, sometimes causing hurt and depression, and fights with their loved ones, without such issues being real and worthy of attention.

What I deduce from the book is that, women – and their partners – have good reason to take notice and seek to address any PMS issues. Whatever sad, depressed, and resentment feelings; whatever anger issues arise every month around your periods, you can expect the same issues many-fold during perimenopause (the 5-10 year or so period before periods stop altogether). This is good reason for you as a woman, and for the man in your life, to want to resolve any such issues.

According to Dr. Northrup, during peri-menopause, women become less and less tolerant to injustice. Whether the injustices in their lives revolve around having to do all the household chores, having to pay for everything, being treated less lovingly, or not being appreciated – at work or at home - women have an urgent need to address/resolve such injustices during this period. This could explain why so many women, after having tried in vain for years to highlight same with their husbands or significant others, finally quit their marriages around this age. During this period, it is as though women want to catch up with parts of their lives that they compromised on for years. This, in my opinion, explains the high rate of women-initiated separations and divorces around middle-age.

2. You are challenged, Ladies!

****************************************************************

Ladies, girls, we need to make it our mission to resolve, along with our husbands/partners, our specific resentment issues that come every month to remind us that all is not well; that things do need to change for the better - and they can. Let PMS assist you to identify issues that threaten to decay and destroy your beautiful union. And then commit to communicate and resolve them with a clearer mind than you perhaps would during PMS.

"It's okay to talk about birth, okay - then menstruation. I first started my advocacy for women's health in the field of reproductive freedom, and the next stage would be bringing menopause out of the closet."
