"NON-SCHOOLING"
IS "NON-SCHOOLING," NON-STRUCTURED-EDUCATION OR NON-FORMAL EDUCATION" A GOOD OPTION FOR CHILDREN?
When I grew up, children whose parents did not take them to school were usually looked at in pity and their parents with apprehension. Non-schooling (though not a recognized/acknowledged “term” at the time) or not going/attending school put them at a disadvantage in a school system that was based on qualifications and not competence.
How does non schooling work?
Non formal schooling works like this:
Unlike home schooling, non-schooled children, in addition to being at home, “do not have structured lessons or formal school lessons”. They are basically “students of life”. Parents believe that life teaches their children more than the class room ever could.
In developed countries, these kids can write competency exams and easily gain entry into a university or college, without a formal high school certificate or diploma.
Are there disadvantages to no schooling?
"Are there disadvantages to no schooling?"
Using informal, unstructured ways of teaching kids at home is not without disadvantages.
There’s so much more that a child can learn in school and school curricula is set/determined by experts who understand the developmental needs of children at various levels/ages, the method and level of education the children need, and how they are prepared for for higher education.
There are social disadvantages too. It can be very lonely, sometimes even for home-schooled children, to interact amongst themselves and have no friends from school. This puts them at a disadvantage because they do not have as good social skills as kids who attended formal schools. Some of them also find it difficult to adapt in the real world because they are not used to interactions with their peers. Some of the kids grow up to be bitter and ask their parents why they were never taken to school because they would have missed so much. For them, it would be like not having had a "right of passage."
